Legal requirements for buyers

The majority of lizard species commonly kept in the UK — including Bearded Dragons, Leopard Geckos, Crested Geckos and Corn Snakes — are not listed under CITES and require no permit, certificate or license to buy, own or sell. They can be purchased and kept freely under UK law.

A small number of lizard species are listed under CITES and require an Article 10 certificate for any sale. If you are purchasing a species you are unsure about, check the APHA’s current species list or contact APHA’s Wildlife Licensing team before completing the purchase.

All lizards are subject to the Animal Welfare Act 2006, which requires owners to meet the five welfare needs of their animal. Sellers operating as a business in England require an Animal Activities License from their local authority under the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) Regulations 2018.

Petsloo UK recommends buying only captive-bred lizards from reputable UK breeders. Wild-caught specimens are heavily restricted under UK import law and are significantly more difficult to keep successfully in captivity.
