Legal requirements for buyers

The majority of snake species commonly kept in the UK — including Corn Snakes, Ball Pythons, Western Hognose Snakes and King Snakes — are not listed under CITES and require no permit, certificate or license to buy, own or sell.

However, some larger constrictor species are subject to additional regulation. Reticulated Pythons (Python reticulatus) over 3 metres and Burmese Pythons (Python bivittatus) are listed under CITES Annex B and may require documentation for commercial sale. Green Anacondas (Eunectes murinus) may also be subject to restrictions. Always verify the species’ current CITES status with APHA before purchasing a large constrictor.

No snake species in the UK currently falls under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976, though venomous species including Gaboon Vipers, Puff Adders and other front-fanged venomous snakes require a Dangerous Wild Animals license from your local authority. Keeping an unlicensed dangerous wild animal is a criminal offence.

All snakes are subject to the Animal Welfare Act 2006. Sellers operating as a business require an Animal Activities License from their local authority.
