Important — UK Legal Requirements for Monkey Ownership
Before purchasing any monkey in the UK, you must be aware of the following:
- All monkeys are covered under the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill and require specific housing, diet and social requirements to be met by law
- Certain species including spider monkeys require a Dangerous Wild Animals (DWA) license issued by your local council — check with your local authority before buying
- Sellers of monkeys operating as a business must hold a valid local authority pet selling license
- CITES-listed species (including many marmosets and capuchins) must be accompanied by valid Article 10 certificates confirming legal captive breeding
- Always ask the seller for their license number, Article 10 documentation, and proof the animal was captive-bred in the UK or legally imported
