Important — UK Legal Requirements for Bird Ownership
- African Grey parrots are listed under CITES Appendix I — they can only be legally sold if captive-bred and accompanied by an Article 10 certificate issued by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA). Always request this document from the seller before purchasing
- Macaws and Cockatoos are CITES Appendix II — sellers must be able to demonstrate legal acquisition
- All commercial bird sellers must display a valid local authority licence number in their listings
- Birds should come with a hatch certificate, ring number, and up-to-date health records
- Never purchase a bird offered with international shipping of eggs or live animals without verified CITES export permits — this may constitute illegal wildlife trade
