Legal requirements for buyers
Bearded Dragons (Pogona vitticeps) are not listed under CITES, the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 or any other UK licensing legislation. No permit, certificate or registration is required to buy, own or sell a Bearded Dragon in the UK. All colour morphs — including Hypo, Zero, Witblits, Leatherback and multi-morph combinations — are covered by this exemption.
All Bearded Dragons sold in the UK should be captive-bred. Sellers operating as a business in England require an Animal Activities License from their local authority under the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) Regulations 2018. Buyers should ask sellers to confirm the dragon is UK captive-bred and request a feeding history before purchasing.
All Bearded Dragons are subject to the Animal Welfare Act 2006. Key welfare requirements include a minimum 4ft x 2ft x 2ft wooden vivarium for adults, T5 UVB lighting (Arcadia D3+ 12% recommended), a basking spot of 40–43°C, and a diet of live insects and fresh vegetables with calcium supplementation on all live food.
